OAKVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY and LAUNCHES A COMMEMORATIVE HISTORY BOOK
Oakville, April 24, 2009 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On April 30, the Oakville Fire Department will celebrate 100 years of service. To recognize this achievement, the Fire Department will display historic memorabilia and cut a birthday cake at Town Hall, North Atrium on Thursday, April 30 at 10 a.m.
“The Oakville Fire Department helps keep Oakville one of Canada’s safest towns,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “For 100 years, they have protected our community. We recognize them for their achievement and thank them for their vital service.
” The Mayor, Members of Council, Fire Chief Richard Boyes and past and present members of the Oakville Fire Department will be on hand to mark the occasion.
“We are very proud of our 100 years of service to our community,” said Richard Boyes, Fire Chief. “Celebrating this event is about recognizing our origins and honoring those who served before us.”
The event will showcase memorabilia from the Fire Department’s history including past equipment, uniforms and the 1948 antique pumper truck. In addition, the Oakville Fire Department is honoring its centennial anniversary with a special commemorative history book, Reflections of a Proud Heritage, which will be released later this summer.
“This book has been in the works for five years,” said John Percy, Fire Prevention Officer and History Book Committee member. “Contributions by firefighters, retired department members and citizens went into the creation of this book. It is thanks to all their time and hard work that we will have the first book chronicling the history of the Oakville Fire Department. The committee would also like to thank the Town of Oakville for their support and assistance of this project.”
The History Book Committee members will be on hand to take pre-release orders of the book. Advance orders of Reflections of a Proud Heritage will cost $35 until May 30 and $45 after May 30. For a limited time, Oakville Fire Department anniversary pins will be given out with each purchase of the book. To reserve a copy of the history book, call 905-845-7114.
