Public Relations Volunteer

Summary of Position: Public Relations Volunteers will work to increase public awareness about the Canadian Fire Fighters Museum and programs. They will assist in expanding its community “stakeholders,” by presenting its assets clearly through well designed promotional materials, and development of an overall publicity campaign plan.

Qualifications: Willing to gain an understanding of the Canadian Fire Fighters Museum, its mission, vision, policies and procedures and programs. Have a proficiency in graphic design, as well as knowledge in the development of publicity campaigns and promotional materials. Public speaking experience is an asset. Willingness to speak to groups on behalf of the Museum on an as-needed basis.

Reports To: Director of Volunteers and Director of Public Relations

Primary Duties: Activities will vary depending on the skills and experience of the volunteer(s) but will include some or all of the public relations activities.

• Assist in identifying key message strategies
• Help create template designs for promotional brochures, posters & flyers as well as exhibit and educational support materials
• Develop a list of local media personnel
• Assist in developing a publicity campaign plan
• Help coordinate and support the ongoing development and implementation of the Museum on all forms of social media

Training Provided: Public Relations volunteers complete a comprehensive orientation to the facility and have regular meetings with the Volunteer Coordinator and Director of Public Relations to plan activities, monitor progress and provide data, background information and problem-solving support.

• All Volunteers are responsible for submitting the following documents prior to the commencement of their volunteer work;
• Signed and completed Volunteer Application
• Completed Criminal Reference Check
• Signed Orientation/Guide Form

Time Commitment: flexible hours, minimum 3 hours per week preferred, minimum 3 month commitment

Ethics: As a volunteer you make a commitment:

• To learn the extent of your role and carry it out fully
• To participate in a way that maintains the professionalism of the Canadian Fire Fighters Museum
• To keep certain information confidential

Grounds for Termination: Failure to carry out assigned responsibilities

• Misrepresenting the Museum or its policies
• Breach of confidentiality
